Coinome Crypto Exchange - Lite Trade

Lite trade is a part of the Coinome project where we focused on beginner users and to make trading crypto accessible to everyone, we’ve realised the need to create a trading experience that’s more intuitive and less intimidating for beginners. Our pro trading interface focused on more experienced users can be overwhelming, and requires higher learning curve that often discourages beginners.

Objective

  • Simplifies the trading process for beginners.

  • Provides necessary information without overwhelming the user.

  • Encourages users to gradually become more proficient traders.

User Interviews and Testing

To really understand the needs and pain points of beginner traders, we talked to some colleagues and a few external users and built personas.

  • Few told us they felt completely lost with trading terms, while some found the order book and recent trades confusing.

  • Many also said they’d love easy access to market news related to the cryptocurrencies they’re interested in.

  • We conducted contextual enquiries and usability testing with our initial wireframe to understand potential usability issues and user behavior.

Competitor analysis

We analysed competitor platforms to identify what worked well and what could be improved.

  • We studied the user journey on other platforms to ensure our solution follows industry standards and aligns with the mental models of experienced users .

Research and Discovery

  1. Understanding the users

We performed user interviews and qualitative and quantitative data analysis to develop personas and understand beginner traders' needs.

  1. Ideation

We developed user journeys and flows, conducted affinity mapping, and held grooming sessions with stakeholders and project members to prioritise essential features and identify opportunities for enhancing the user experience.

  1. Iteration

Developed wireframes, tested them and refined them into high-fidelity designs, and conducted usability testing and multiple heuristics evaluations to optimise the final product.

User flow

Design

Simplified data analysis

Bigger Graph with Essential Data: A simplified, larger graph displaying time, prices, change volume, high, low, and other critical data points to help users make informed decisions at a glance.

Clear Descriptions: Added descriptions and basic information about each coin to help users understand what they are trading.

Intuitive Order Placement

Market and Limit Orders: Designed the interface to ensure consistency between market and limit orders, making it easier for users to switch between the two. Also added descriptions for market and limit orders while switching as 45% new/moderate users interviewed did not understand it.

Preview Order Page: Stakeholders told us in initial version, there have been concerns or complaints about executing trades with errors.
Hence we introduced a preview order page to show details before finalising a buy/sell order, reducing errors and increasing user confidence.

Add Funds Button: Included an "Add Funds" button within the trade form, allowing users to quickly top up their accounts if they don't have sufficient funds to place an order.

Information Accessibility

Info Icons and Descriptions: 40% of users we interviewed don't have much understanding of what order book and recent trades are. Thus we added info icons and detailed descriptions for trading terms like "order book" and "recent trades" to help users understand these concepts without leaving the page.

Dark Mode: Introduced a dark mode switch as some users preferred it. We found that is also imperative in trading to avoid eye strains. We assumed users would spend more time trading as well.

News Section

Trending News: 60% users we interviewed said they would check news before buying crypto. So we added news section for each cryptocurrency, displaying the latest market news and updates. Helps users stay informed and make better trading decisions.

Iterations

Internal Discussions

Collaborated closely with the design team and stakeholders to refine the design. Addressed feedback and concerns, such as the inclusion of the "Add Funds" button, which was initially removed but later reintroduced based on internal testing and user feedback.

Testing and Refinement

Conducted multiple rounds of usability testing and contextual enquiries to identify and address issues.

  • Simplified elements based on feedback, ensuring that the interface is intuitive and easy to navigate for beginners.

  • Made adjustments to the design to balance simplicity with the necessary functionality.

Final design

Dark mode

We've also added dark mode to reduce eye strain on low-light environment and long trading sessions, reducing glare and fatigue while maintaining all features.

Mobile app

We’ve developed a mobile app to offer users the convenience of trading wherever they are. App has all the key features of our platform, optimised for mobile devices, allowing users to get notifications and make informed trading decisions anytime.

By focusing on simplicity and accessibility, we were able to create a platform that empowers beginner traders to confidently engage in cryptocurrency trading. If you would like to learn more about this project or have any questions, please reach out to me.
